Northern Illinois University Shooting

Police have not officially released the names of any of the victims. The Northern Star (NIU’s student newspaper) is reporting that Daniel Parmenter, a sophomore at the university, was among those killed. Chicago news outlets are also reporting names of four of the surviving victims:

  • Joseph Peterson, a graduate assistant and instructor of the course in session at the time of the shooting
  • Patrick Korellias, ,a student in the class at the time of the shooting
  • J.D. Donohue, a student in the class at the time of the shooting
  • Ah-Num Rahman, a student in the class at the time of the shooting

8:55 p.m. CST, 2/14/08

NIU can confirm six fatalities, including the gunman. Four of the dead were female and two, including the gunman, were male. In total, there were 22 injured or killed.
NIU can confirm that the shooter was an NIU graduate student in sociology in the Spring of 2007 but was not currently enrolled.
The NIU Department of Public Safety is asking that any individuals who witnessed the Feb. 14 shooting, or who believe they have any information related to the shooting, call the University Tip Line at (815) 753-TIPS. Police will return calls as soon as possible.

News & Notices

  • NIU has scheduled a news conference for 9 a.m. CST on Friday, February 15, in the Altgeld Hall Auditorium.
  • Kishwaukee Community Hospital has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. CST on Friday, February 15.
  • NIU’s Open House scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18 is canceled.
  • All NIU athletic events, home and away, are canceled through Sunday, Feb. 17.
  • Classes at all NIU campuses are canceled for tonight (2/14/08) and tomorrow (2/15/08); Essential personnel should report to work.

A Student/Family Resource Center, staffed by Student Affairs personnel and counselors, has been established in the Heritage Room of the Holmes Student Center (2nd floor).
Counseling for NIU students is available in the following locations:

  • Psychological Services Center in the Psychology/Computer Science Building
  • Stevenson Multipurpose Room
  • Grant North (C/D) Lounge

Update: Feb. 14, 2008 8:00 p.m.
CNN just reported that the only fatality was the gunman. Gunman committed suicide on stage.

Gunman wore all black and used shotgun first then switched to pistol. 3 victims with head wounds and in grave condition. Police say gunman killed himself. Gunman entered an ocean sciences class then opened fire. No word as to the identity of the gunman. Police identified the shooter but are not releasing the name. Gunman was not a student.
Gunman didn’t speak , students dropped to floor after first shot.
3 p.m. the situation began. 162 registered for class in which shooting took place.
CNN has reported at least 18 people shot
The reports are conflicting and sketchy as the situation is fluid. Last report has 17 shot 3 critically.
2 dead 17 injured /gunman dead POSSIBLE SUICIDE (?) FIRED AT LEAST 20 ROUNDS/ HE ENTERED CLASS AND OPENED FIRE
13 BEING TREATED FOR GUNSHOT MOSTLY TO THE HEAD.

Campus police report that the scene is secure. Only essential personnel should remain on campus.

All NIU students are asked to call their parents as soon as possible.

Campus police reiterate that an immediate danger has passed. Students should return to their residence halls and stay there. All classes are cancelled and all NIU campuses are closed for tonight and tomorrow (2/15/08).
