Fusion Centers: An American Stasi ?

At first glance, The Siege looks to be a flag waving, hero’s are us kind of American patriot film. But upon further review, and if you honestly give this movie a chance and listen to what it has to say, you’ll see that it wants us to listen, it wants us to learn and it wants us to just look at the possibilities of ” what if? “.

Well, if you ask me I think we are beyond the question of ” what if? “. The above is a description by Dan Grant from Toronto, Ontario of the movie The Siege. You might say that it is a chilling description of present day America. The ” what if? “. Scenario  is no longer what if? It is here in the way of the Fusion Centers!

The ACLU expressed concern about this back in January of 2007 with regards to privacy issues:
at a time when new technology, government powers and zeal in the “war on terrorism” are combining to threaten Americans’ privacy at an unprecedented level.

Now, Amy Goodman has expressed similar concerns in her article Don’t Cage Dissent on Truthdig.com which also appears in Common Dreams.org. Her opening sentence states the issue in a direct  “ in your face “ manner:
The bulwark against tyranny is dissent. Open opposition, the right to challenge those in power, is a mainstay of any healthy democracy.

and a Denver CBS4 News report echoes scenes from the Siege:

“ the city is planning on jailing arrested Democratic convention protesters at a warehouse with barbed-wire-topped cages and signs warning of the threat of stun gun use“.

This chilling scenario keeps looking more and more like the Stasi State of East Germany of old.  It was widely regarded as one of the most effective and repressive intelligence and secret police agencies in the world. They monitored political behavior among GDR citizens, and is known to have used torture and intimidation to mute dissent.

As of March 2008 these Fusion Centers now number 58. You might want to take a look at this  at the Homeland Security website: State and Local Fusion Centers.

Isn’t it ironic that American journalist are reporting on dissent in China during the Beijing Olympics while all of this is taking place back in the states?

Amy Goodman is the host of “Democracy Now!,” )a daily international TV/radio news hour airing on more than 700 stations in North America.
