U.N. human rights body backs new probe of Myanmar

GENEVA (Reuters) – The U.N. Human Rights Council told Myanmar on Friday to prosecute those who committed abuses during a crackdown on peaceful monk-led protests and free Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners.

Women’s group chair ill-treated in detention
Dec 14, 2007 (DVB)–The chairperson of the Burmese Housewives’ Association, Daw San San Myint, has described how she was beaten and arrested during fuel price protests on 24 August in Rangoon.
Around 20 members of the association were arrested after they staged a protests in front of Rangoon city hall.
Daw San San Myint said that she was beaten up and arrested before taken to Kyaikkasan interrogation centre. For more click here.
Detainees jailed on USDA threat charges lose appeal
Dec 14, 2007 (DVB)–Six people imprisoned in October for intimidating the Union Solidarity and Development Association have had their appeal rejected, according to their lawyer U Myint Thwin.
The six are family members and colleagues of National League for Democracy member Than Lwin, who was attacked by a man with a knuckle-duster in June. For more click here.
Villagers claim crimes covered up by officials
Dec 11, 2007 (DVB)–Taung Twin Gyi township residents are angry that local authorities have ordered police to stop investigating crimes reportedly committed by government supporters following two incidents in the area.
Villagers have claimed that township Peace and Development Council chairman U Khin Maung Oo was responsible for the cover-ups in the villages in Taung Twin Gyi township, Magwe division. For more click here.
U.S president’s wife tells military leaders in Myanmar to step aside or accept democracy
AP Posted: 2007-12-10 11:11:01 WASHINGTON (AP) – Laura Bush on Monday used International Human Rights Day to call on Myanmar’s military-run government to step aside if it cannot help bring about a democratic transition in the Southeast Asian nation.
